For more than 150 years, A. Edmonds & Co. Ltd has been delivering high-quality shopfitting and interior fit-outs across the UK. A timely upgrade

When it came time to replace an ageing wide belt sander from another brand, Edmonds wanted a machine that combined durability with advanced performance. “Our old machine had served us well, but it had become dated and unreliable,” explains Chris Ludlam, Works Manager at Edmonds. “We were having to call engineers out on a regular basis, so it was time to invest in something new.”

The team already had a Heesemann sander in their mill dedicated to veneer sanding. Its consistent quality made the choice straightforward. “The lads in the workshop were keen to get another Heesemann. We continue to use our existing model for fine sanding, while the new HSM 3 handles all our calibrating and sanding of solids,” says Chris.

Confidence in Heesemann and HOMAG

When Edmonds contacted Heesemann, they were directed to HOMAG, the UK distributor. “That was fine by us,” Chris notes. “HOMAG’s reputation precedes them, and we were more than happy to engage with them.”

Although the team already had confidence in the brand, HOMAG invited Edmond’s operators to see the HSM 3 in action. “Seeing it run confirmed what we already suspected – it was clearly very capable and exactly what we needed to keep the business moving forward.”

Smooth installation and hands-on training

The installation was carried out with minimal disruption. “It arrived on schedule, and HOMAG got the machine commissioned without issue,” Chris recalls. “They stayed with us for five days, making sure our operators were fully comfortable with the machine. By the end, everyone was confident using it to its full potential.”

Reliability, quality and simplicity

The Heesemann wide belt sander has brought several benefits for Edmonds. “The biggest thing for us has been the reliability,” says Chris. “As mentioned, our old sander was starting to flag, so with this investment we really wanted something dependable. It was installed at the end of last year, and nine months on, we’ve had no issues.

“We’re also thrilled with the speed, quality, and general capabilities of this new machine. We knew what to expect, but equally, we were pleasantly surprised to see exactly what our business could achieve with such advanced technology. 

“Another thing to note is the sander’s simplicity. Despite its advanced functions, it is very straightforward to use. The display is user-friendly and intuitive, so any of our operators can step up and use it without difficulty, which keeps our operation fluid and flexible.”

Chris praises both companies for the way the project was handled. “Heesemann make great machines, and they clearly have an excellent partner in HOMAG, who handled everything from sales to aftercare extremely well. They’re friendly, responsive, and professional. It’s great to know we have them as a partner moving forward.”

Looking ahead

With the Heesemann HSM 3 now firmly embedded in production, Edmonds is set to continue its long tradition of high-quality manufacturing with renewed efficiency and confidence. 

“This was a big investment for us, but we have no regrets,” Chris concludes. “We couldn’t be happier with the machine and the support. It’s strengthened our operation and will enable us to continue the legacy of our business for years to come. Long may the partnership continue.”
